Hello

Thursday, March 29, 2012

Its been awhile...

well its been some time since i have been on here and posted anything.. sorry guys for not keeping things more updated.. i have just been so busy lately with the daycare and figuring out the best way for my son to learn..
I have been really struggling with this and trying so hard to find what will work great for us.. i really want him to have this love of learning and not be stressed out about it. i love that he is so curious about things.. but i have also learned that if i push him too much he just pulls back and that anything too structured really stresses him out and he just shuts down.. that doesn't help anything and he doesn't learn anything and we both end up flustered.. so we have taken a long break and have not done much.. he is starting to relax and i like that.. what we have been doing lately is some reading work on www.readingkingdom.com he likes that.. its like a game to him...

so, i am thinking of switching gears again.. but at the same time i feel bad to keep switching gears.. is it gonna hurt him to keep changing?? but i just want to find what works best for us and really it is just 1st grade.. we still have lots of time... lol
i am so intrigued by the idea of unschooling. i am so looking into it.. i am just worried that if i don't "sit him down" for "school" time that he will do nothing.. if i leave his days to him, he will sleep in, watch cartoons wander in for breakfast then maybe some ds gaming or beyblading.. more cartoons or even cartoons and beyblading at the same time... then maybe some wii time.. oh and if the weather is remotely nice he will be outside on his scooter till he gets bored.. then back in, toys, tv, gaming... oh and throw some snacks in there too and he is a very happy camper.. but.....i know you learn from everyday activities, but what about math?? learning to read??  and as he gets older, what about social studies and science?? how do they learn these things naturally without any formal teaching??  i have so many questions and will be spending some time researching and hoping to learn all about it.. please share any info  you may  have...
I am also so excited for the end of May!!  I am going to an Unschooling Conference!!  woo hoo!!
here is a link to the conference i am attending...  i am so excited

well thanks again for listening to my ramblings...  i look forward to hearing from you...

I've been invited to try Time4Learning for a month in exchange for a candid review. Their online program can be used for homeschool, as an after school tutorial and for summer learning. My opinion will be my own, so come back and read about my experience. You can write your own curriculum review, too!

A Great Reading Program

I wanted to tell you about a great online reading program.. its called Reading Kingdom and you can check it out: (just click the picture to visit the website!)

They offer a free trial so go over there and check it out.. its great.  My 6yr old uses it and enjoys it.. it has a placement test so you can make sure your little one starts out at the right level, there is even a program that helps them learn to use a keyboard and mouse.. I liked that part of it, it really helps them learn to maneuver around and use the keyboard well.
My son loves that its like he is playing a game and i like that he gets to work at his own pace.  I also like that i get progress reports and can always look and see  how he is doing and if he needs extra help with anything.  Its very easy to check his progress and see how he is doing and it also tells you if your child needs more help with a level.
The customer service is also great.  He tried another program, but it was super repetitive and he got really bored with it quickly. Reading Kingdom keeps his attention and he has actually learned a lot from it too. I highly recommend this program....

* i was not paid or given anything for my review.. I just like this program and wanted to share. the above opinions are my opinions and thoughts on the program..

1st Grade has Started!!

Well 1st grade started yesterday and well, it didn't go as smooth as i hoped.. lol but it was a good day none the less.. today was much better and didn't take quite as long to finish.. We haven't been able to start his math program yet, cause i need the manipulatives for him to begin.. and am still looking to purch Explode the Code book 1.. But right now we are working on:
Bible Study
Bob Books
Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading
106 Days of Creation
Mystery of History Vol 1
and we are finishing up his Explode the Code "Go for the Code" he has just a few pages left to finish up and should finish tomorrow..

We were doing some writing in a journal but it seemed to be slightly stressful for him as he really struggles with writig.. so i am thinking of dropping that for now.. do any of you have any ideas to take the stress out of it??  he liked the idea of having a journal, but doesn't want to write in it.. lol.. its hard for him..

Today in Mystery of History, he made Adam and Eve out of his Playdough...
Somehow he managed to make Eve bigger then Adam.. ...  if you look close, you can see a little red mixed in with the green.. thats because God used a piece of Adam to make Eve so Isaiah did the same... :)  he is very proud of hisself..
